Ultros - Typhon

This fight is difficult and can be time consuming. Prepare with lots of Remedies, Potions, and Wound Potions. This fight requires some of the best/strongest builds so prepare your monsters carefully. We recommend a Commando that does heavy damage, a Ravager with a pro-stagger build, and a Sentinel with high defenses and HP. This strategy will not result in five stars, but it is still possible to recieve both monster's crystals anyway. Be sure to finish Typhon off with a Feral Link ability.

PARADIGM NOEL SERAH MONSTER
Cerberus - X COM COM COM
Tri-disaster - X RAV RAV RAV
Tortoise SEN SEN SEN
Consolidation X SEN MED SEN
Solidarity COM MEDSEN
Combat Clinic MED MED SEN

Before detailing the strategy, there are a few things to understand about Ultros and Typhon. They have a very unique relationship. Typhon will only fight for as long as he has buffs. Ultros will periodically cast them on him. Once his buffs all wear off, he switches to "Motivation Lost". He will gain all the status ailments and become inactive. Ultros will prod him and as he responds one or two of his ailments will disappear. When all the afflictions wear off he will signal "Motivation Restored". An assortment of buffs will appear on him starting the cycle over. Now if Ultros loses all his HP or comes close, Typhon will use Renew and restore him to full HP. As this implies, there is little to nothing gained by trying to eliminate Ultros first. In fact, you are not meant to. He is dealt with in a Cinematic Action sequence after Typhon is killed.

  • The first segment you face Ultros alone. Simply pound him till the real fight begins. Everything will reset when Typhon arrives.
  • Using Tri-disaster build Typhon's chain gauge. Ignore Ultros throughout the fight.
  • Anytime Ultros uses Frost Breath or Typhon uses Snort switch to Tortoise. These deal heavy damage and spending too much time recovering drags the battle out. Typhon's Gnash can deal a heavy amount of damage to one character so a quick flip to Tortoise can mitigate this.
  • Typhon's attacks can inflict daze as well as wound damage. Use Remedies and Wound potions as needed.
  • When a single character needs healing switch to Solidarity to keep the chain from dropping. When all the characters need healing switch to Combat Clinic.
  • When Typhon staggers switch to Cerberus, but don't expect to stay in this the entire time. Depending on where he is in his cycle, you might still need to switch for defense and healing.
  • Once Typhon's life drops to roughly the halfway point, he starts randomely casting Fireball. This spell has the potential to wipe out the party and he may cast it twice in a row. Be absolutely sure the moment the tag announces it to switch to Tortoise.
  • The latter half of the game Consolidation and Solidarity may prove more necessary.
  • Towards the end be patient and careful. Continue to stagger when able to and save a Feral Link strike for the end.
