Ivalice is home to empires and small kingdoms alike. Our tale concerns the plight of Dalmasca, one of the small, independent kingdoms sandwiched between the Archadian and Rosarian empires. During Archadia's steady advance through these small kingdoms Dalmasca's king was slain, reportedly by its greatest general. Now it is a property of Archadia. Dalmasca's princess, Ashe, was said to have committed suicide after her father's murder. Archadia's rule of Dalmasca is not a peaceful one and a resistance is beginning to boil.

Vaan, a young orphan, is one of Dalmasca's unhappy citizens. After losing his family to plague and his older brother in the Archadian takeover, he harbors much hatred for his country's opressors. When he's not thieving or dreaming of becoming a sky pirate he contemplates ways to get back at the empire he despises. His chance comes when the empire enstates the emperor's oldest son as consul over Dalmasca. In the chaos of celebration Vaan sneaks into the palace and falls headfirst into a tangle of impirial politics and Dalmascan resistance with a few sky pirates thrown in for kicks. As he slowly gathers comrades he must find a way to save Dalmasca and possibly all of Ivalice from the mess of politics and looming war.
